在英美社会，种种“费用”的用词五花八门，不像汉语中可以用一个“费”字来代表。例如：
1. expense(花费，开支) 如：current expense(日常开支)，selling expenses(销售开支).
2. admission(指入场费) 如：How much is the admission for the concert?(这场音乐会的门票要多少钱?)
3. charge(原价，要价) 主要用于一次性劳务所收取的费用，如服务费、旅馆费等。如：What are the charges listed for all services?(列出的所有服务费是多少?)
4. cost(本义为“成本”,“原价”) 常用于表示对已取得的货物或劳务所支付的费用。如：This bag is sold at cost.(这只包是按成本价出售的。)
5. fare(指旅客乘公共汽车、出租车、火车、轮船、飞机等交通工具所支付的费用) 如：What’s the train fare to London?(到伦敦的火车票价是多少?)
6. fee(医生、律师或其他专门职业的佣金及会费、手续费、停车费等) 如：The membership fee of the golf club is 1,000 dollars a year.(这个高尔夫俱乐部的会费是每年1000美元。)
7. freight(运费) 指海、空、陆运的费用。如：Who will pay the freight on this order?(谁支付这批订货的运费?)
8. postage(指邮费) 如：How much postage do I need to send this package?(寄这个包裹要多少钱?)
9. rent(土地、建筑物、房舍等定期的租金) 如：The rent is the lowest of the similar kinds of flats in this district.(这里的租金是本地区同样的公寓中最低的。)
10. tip(通常指对一次性劳务所付的小费) 如：I gave my hair-dresser a tip.(我给理发师一笔小费。)
11. toll(道路、桥梁等的通行费及电话费) 如：Some highways have tollgate.(有些公路设有收费处。)
12. tuition(学生的学费) 如：He took a part-time job to pay his tuition.(他做兼职工作来付学费。)
